2023 Agricola Flaxman Valley Shiraz Barossa Valley – The Powell family have been making award winning wines in the Barossa for decades. Now son Callum has released his on Barossa label. These wines are totally different to your usual big, bold reds of the Barrosa – lower alcohol, lo-fi, pure and elegant.
This release sees 4 wines in the range – Ebenezer, Flaxman Valley, K’ Sands and DWxHV. 2023 was a significantly cool, prolonged harvest. Many of their sites were picked two weeks later than usual. This long and cool season resulted in considerable structural backbones of these wines, while still maintaining vibrant perfumes and flavour profiles.
Fruit for this wine is sourced from Naimanya ‘Original Vineyard’, Burley ‘Hill’ and Home 100+ year ‘Old Vines’. 2009 bottles produced.
The first thing you notice is the alcohol level of 13.6%. But don’t fear there is still plenty of flavour and character to be had. A great mix of red and dark fruits, pepper, spice and savoury goodness. A fair whack of herbs too. The tannins are so fine and interwoven. So fresh and elegant. Ready to rock and will improve if kept open for a night or two. So different, so good.
