2022 Coriole Sparta Shiraz McLaren Vale – Shiraz is the great tradition of McLaren Vale going back over 150 years, and is the major variety planted at Coriole. Alongside shiraz, cabernet, grenache and chenin blanc, Coriole produces alternative varieties such as piquepuol, nero d’avola, montepulciano and negroamaro. Coriole has been a pioneer of Italian varieties since 1985, with the oldest sangiovese and fiano vineyards in Australia.
The Sparta vineyard was planted around 25 years ago on a north facing hillside on the western boundary of their property. The style is bright, rich and full bodied.
The vineyard is surrounded on all sides by Kalamata and Koroneiki olive trees that they process into table olives on the estate. There is a further Greek connection as the property was originally owned by a Greek family who originated from the countryside surrounding Sparta in Greece.
A rich, full bodied Shiraz with loads of juicy blue and red fruits which are integrated with exotic spices. Fresh and forward the wine has good structure and fine tannins. Length is smooth and long.
