Gundagai: Home of Ballads, Storytellers and Tumblong Hills ‘Track Winding Back’ Wine Range

Just as Australia’s storyteller, the great Slim Dusty once sang, there’s a track winding back along the road to Gundagai. In this case, it is winding back to Tumblong Hills Wines who delivered an impressive 2021 vintage featuring Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. At the foothills of the Snowy Mountains near the Murrumbidgee River, Gundagai, vineyards have been thriving since 1877.

The big, hearty 2021 Shiraz and the fruit-driven 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon are the focus of today’s blog. Both pair exquisitely with red meat stews, BBQs and roasts.

Located just under 2km north of the Murrumbidgee River and alongside the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Tumblong Hills benefits from cool alpine breezes and volcanic-red iron-rich soils(*1). In addition to the idyllic wine growing conditions, head winemaker, Simon Robertson takes the utmost care to ensure the winery is sustainable and the soil health is maintained year after year(*1).

Vintages are purposefully crafted every year. Although the team have a good idea of what to expect each harvest, there is always an element of magic. Mother nature, the soil and the vines seem to bring together something unique every year. As a result, every vintage tells its own story and offers a unique tasting experience for the wine lover(*1).

A Quick Note on Red Wine Colours

Wine colour varies and is dependent on a range of factors. These include:

• Grape varietal.
• How quickly skins were removed.
• How long fruit was fermented with skins.
• The filtration process.
• Ageing.
• Blending.

Generally speaking, the more vivid or bright the colour, the younger the wine(*2,3). This is because wine naturally oxidises as it ages and thus the colour becomes slightly duller (browner)(*2,3). Some wines will cellar for 10 or even 20 years before the vividness of the colour drops(*2,3).

Shiraz Tasting Notes, Food Pairing and Online Ordering

• Colour: Deep purple. We’re not talking about the band, Deep Purple here. The plum hue of this wine suggests it was crafted with long-ripened, concentrated fruit and will have a good body(*2-4).
Aroma: Ripe red cherries and a hint of anise titillates the senses(*4).
• Palate: The colour proves correct. The palate is medium-bodied with flavourful, full-berry fruits. American and French Oak are integrated well(*4).
Finish: An enduring finish ensures the wine isn’t rushed and can be enjoyed(*4).
• Food Pairings: This Shiraz will compliment, without being over-shadowed even the boldest and heartiest of meat stews. Furthermore, it will pair well with smoked paprika, chilli and meat rubs(*4).

• Colour: Vivid magenta. Given the vintage year, this wine has had time to age and is certainly well worth tasting.
Aroma: High notes of fresh blackberries(*5).
Palate: Fruit-forward, boasting berries and red fruits and complex with French Oak(*5).
Finish: Dry with just enough fine tannins to cleanse the palate(*5).
Food Pairings: A stand-out wine to pair with hearty, flavoursome dishes such as filet mignon, prime rib, lamb, tuna or salmon dishes. It would also make a divine red wine sauce – just remember to keep some for your glass at dinner as well!(*5)
